Budding NRL referees and coaches to receive training and qualifications locally
Those interested in becoming a certified referee, coach, or other supporting Match Official, will now be able to receive their education and accreditation locally, following the launch of a new partnership today between the Country Universities Centre (CUC) and the National Rugby League (NRL).
Announced this morning at the CUC Snowy Monaro in Cooma by NSW Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro MP, the Memorandum of Understanding will enable students of any age, using CUC locations across the State, to learn how to become a certified NRL Match Official.
General Manager of Officiating for the NRL, Tony Archer, says the collaboration will provide a supported pathway to rural and remote communities, ultimately preventing post-code disadvantage:
“One of the key challenges for the game when it comes to recruiting and keeping officials in regional locations has been the ability to give them education and training facilities.
“We already have a strong presence in major centres through our HUBS (High-performance University-Based Structure) and now we will enhance our facilities in regional centres through this partnership with CUC,” Mr Archer said.
Chief Executive Officer for the CUC, Duncan Taylor, believes the partnership demonstrates the breadth of learning opportunities available through the Centres:
“Any person in a regional community has a right to access great education. And if a student’s desire is to become the next Tony Archer – then we are going to do everything we can to support that student in achieving their goal.
“If along the way that student also decides they want to become a teacher – we’ll help provide that educational opportunity too,” Mr Taylor said.
There are currently 1,604 referees within the NSW Country network, which accounts for 36 per cent of rugby league referees across Australia (4,438).
